Pests are a natural part of Gardyning. Despite incorporating our suggested preventive measures, pests can happen, but it’s going to be okay!
If you're here because you're fairly confident you've identified fungus gnats on your Gardyn, keep reading! Otherwise, review our pest identification guide here.
Fungus Gnat Control
Fungus gnats may not be as common as aphids, however, they are still one of the more common pests Gardyners may experience.
Adult fungus gnats flying in and around your Gardyn are often the first signs of a pending infestation. You may also see larvae present in the rockwool, roots, or in the inside of your yPods during routine root maintenance.
If you catch the the problem early and the infestation is light, adding yellow sticky traps (like these) to catch adult gnats is often enough to to solve the problem.
We also recommend treating the surface of your yCubes with an organic spray, such as SNS 203 Spray, which kills the larvae by drying them out. This spray is safe to use around pets and children, but it must be reapplied regularly to be effective.
In addition, bug-catching devices (like these) are great because they require no chemicals or additives, and only have one up-front cost.
One last tip from our Plant Experts:
Develop a control system that works best for you. A combination of treatments will be most effective.
For best results, be proactive! Applying preventative measures can help you avoid infestations from the start and will encourage would-be pests to search for less stressful options.
If you decide you'd rather start fresh with a set of all-new yCubes on your Gardyn rather than fighting your current pest problem, be sure to do a Light Cleaning first to sterilize your device and help you avoid a repeat pest problem.
